This is such an overused topic currently. I know it’s fundamental to your success in every way, but I fear it’s not explained well and used by many in the wrong manner.
Typically, when asked Why “Why do you do what you do?” You answer with a customer statement. “I do this because I want to see my customers successful or happy or fulfilled”. But this is not your why…it’s what you do. Because if you don’t do the above then…You go out of business.
Your why is an inner drive. It’s your reason for behaving a certain way. It’s your reason for the level of passion you put into your work.
It’s not a made-up story because it’s nice to say or it makes you look good in your customers eyes.
Your why is vulnerable and raw. It’s experiences which have shaped you into what you are today. It’s your unwavering beliefs, habits and values. It’s made up of many seeds which have been planted during your upbringing which started at a very young age…most likely before you remember…and repeated over time or significant enough to burn a passion or lesson into your approach to doing good.
Your why is attractive and therefore it so important in today’s business world, because like attracts like and most of the time people want to do business with people like themselves.
Your why can be emotional…either sad or happy but it’s about you! Not your customer.
